Georgian pianist Lika Bibileishvili didn’t choose the easy option for this imposing album, in which she travels across Europe with a sonata by Prokofiev for 1939 Russia, a sonata by Bartók for 1926 Hungary, the 13 pieces Op. 76 by Sibelius for Finland in the 1910s and 20s, and Gaspard de la nuit for 1908 France: nothing but legendary works! Granted Sibelius’ 13 pieces are not really part of usual pianist's repertoire – and they have it all wrong it must be said, as it is a beautiful, singing music, probably not as easy at it appears, as its discourse requires perfect fluidity for articulation and phrasing; on the contrary, Bartók’s Sonata, likely a bit more challenging to listen to, requires an additional touch of melodic line from the interpreter, while keeping a rather Magyar peasant ferocity in their fingers for many parts, something in which Lika Bibileishvili excels. Equally as ferocious is Prokofiev’s Piano Sonata No. 6, for which the pianist unleashes all of her ardour. Finally, in a style of great transparency, Gaspard de la nuit allows her to show another side of her tremendous talent. © SM/Qobuz
