En los años noventa George Michael estaba obsesionado por ser tomado en serio como artista, ambición ya declarada desde el título de su segundo álbum solista, Listen Without Prejudice, Vol. 1. Older, su sucesor de 1996, hace que Listen Without Prejudice parezca Faith. En este álbum Michael descarta completamente el pop bailable y sensual que lo llevó a la fama por una serie de baladas ampulosas. Si bien su probada habilidad como compositor de pop sigue siendo evidente, el tono solemne termina por jugarle en contra.
