A partir de Perfect Symmetry (2008), Keane comenzó a experimentar con el pop de los 80, el R&B y otros géneros muy apartados del pop/rock con el que empezaron. Con Night Train experimentan aún más: la pieza que abre el disco es una pieza instrumental de estilo ambient, y luego hay colaboraciones de músicos de R&B (como el artista de hip-hop somalí K'Naan y la cantante japonesa Tigarah). La presencia de K'Naan no se limita a ser un mero cameo, sino que aparece en dos canciones que dirige activamente, con lo que "Looking Back" se convierte en un híbrido de pop/funk/soft rock, y hace que "Stop for a Minute" tenga algo del pop digital de Justin Timberlake.
