In 2011, A$AP Rocky enjoyed meteoric success. First came his single Peso, then his first mixtape, LIVE. LOVE. ASAP. As a member of the New York collective A$AP Mob, he went from hopeful to heavyweight in no time, influenced by the sounds of the Big Apple, but above all by Southern rap, especially the Houston sound. The slowed down tempos on Acid Drip, the distorted voices on Bass, the nebulous ambiences on Wassup... His sound palette, fleshed out by producers like Clams Casino, DJ Burn One again or Beautiful Lou, is strikingly broad. The guests are prestigious: Schoolboy-Q reaches new heights on Brand New Guy, Fat Tony represents Houston with Get Lit, and colleagues A$AP Ferg, A$AP Twelvy and A$AP Nast make LIVE. LOVE. ASAP feel like a family affair. The sound is sophisticated, rather muted on Demons and massive on Peso.
