El último álbum de The Doors con Jim Morrison es de lejos el más blusero de la banda. El ardor poético del cantante no ha disminuido un ápice, aunque en algunos temas su voz suena cada vez más quebrada y desgastada. En realidad, algunos de los números de blues más ortodoxos son algo ampulosos, pero se ven largamente compensados por la inclusión de algunas de las obras más brillantes y perturbadoras de toda la carrera del grupo. El tema de siete minutos que da nombre a la placa, una celebración simultánea del glamour y la sordidez de Los Angeles, se convirtió en un clásico para travesías automovilísticas; el otro tema largo, "Riders on the Storm", una melancólica cavilación de aires jazz, encontraba al grupo en su punto más melódico y ominoso. Este último y el mucho más animado "Love Her Madly" fueron sencillos de éxito, mientras que "The Changeling" y "L'America" están entre los mejores temas de repertorio que no son tan conocidos.
