Temporarily casting aside their treasured Italian repertoire (in which Claudio Monteverdi is a particular favourite), the English ensemble I Fagiolini offers us a little gem devoted to the madrigals of English composer John Wilbye. Born in Suffolk in 1574, he was the author of the last madrigals composed in an England that hadn’t quite discovered the Baroque movement that was emerging on the rest of the continent.
His music is exquisite, jostling with expressive chromaticism and shrouded in a subtle sense of melancholy. His two Books of Madrigals—published in 1598 and 1609—came about at the same time as those of Gesualdo, and there’s a definite expressive similarity between the work of these two composers. The famous English madrigalist focuses on the theme of unrequited love and the torment it causes, and juxtaposes it with the sweetness and beauty there is to be found in life: a theme every poet and musician adores.
The singers of the I Fagiolini ensemble, led by Robert Hollingworth, are no strangers to this delicate music, having taken part in Tony Britten’s 2015 film Draw on Sweet Night, depicting the life of John Wilbye and his scandalous relationships with his female patrons.
