In 1950 Stan Kenton led his most radical band, a 37-piece orchestra with 14 strings and such sidemen as altoists Art Pepper and Bud Shank, Bob Cooper on tenor, trumpeters Shorty Rogers, Chico Alvarez and Maynard Ferguson, trombonist Milt Bernhart, two French horns, a tuba, guitarist Laurindo Almeida, drummer Shelly Manne, Carlos Vidal on congas and singer June Christy. This LP contains some very advanced writing by Pete Rugolo ("Conflict" and "Mirage"), Bill Russo ("Solitaire") and particularly Bob Graettinger ("Incident in Jazz") in addition to features for Kenton's piano ("Theme for Sunday"), June Christy ("Lonesome Road") and Carlos Vidal ("Cuban Episode"). The music is often quite fascinating and very advanced; it was reissued on CD with the contents of the same year's Stan Kenton Presents (plus much additional material) as the two-disc set The Innovations Orchestra.
