The heroes in question on this album are those put to music by Gluck in some eight different operas of his – it should be reminded that, far from having just composed four famous works, to wit Orfeo ed Euridice, Iphigénie en Tauride, Iphigenie auf Tauris and Alceste, Gluck boasts a repertoire of some twoscore and eight operas (be they dramma per musica, opéras comiques, tragedies, drames lyriques, azione teatrale or any other shape) between 1741 and 1781. As a consequence, there is no lack of other heroic roles in the Gluckian repertory: and many memorable parts were assigned for the alto voice – a that time, held either by castrati, haute-contres or ladies, according to national habits, fashion and the Zeitgeist. And it is precisely this repertory, written for excellent interpreters – and yet still rarely performed today: works such as La Sofonisba, Demofoonte, Cleonice, Ippolito or Ipermestra – which is celebrated on this album by the Italian contralto Sonia Prina, whose highly energetic performances onstage (she is specialized in those countless roles of the baroque repertoire) are both vocally and dramatically a feast. It should be stressed that most of these arias are world premiere recordings… yes, even with Gluck there are such things as unheard-of pieces! © SM/Qobuz
