Gaoule is a compilation of material from 1987 to 1989 originally released in 1990. Although a talent of the highest caliber, Marijose Alie has chosen to redo and remix some classic songs like "Tomaline" and "Caresse Moin," which were much more impressive and expressive in their original form. The original "Caresse Moin" done with Malavoi is a delectable erotic morsel. In the process of re-interpreting these songs, she has fallen prey to the European techno-synthesized influence on these tracks. However, the rest of the album combines her crystalline voice with some unique arrangements by Jacky Bernard and expert musicianship and vocal backup. Toots Thielemans's distinctive harmonica accompanies her on "Moon a Lune." "Cha Pistache" is a mambo-inspired track that crackles with energy. The groove quotient is high on "Café Cho" as well. With the exception of the first and last tracks, the rest of the album is well worth a close listen even if you're not fluent in Martiniquan creole. It's a younger Marijose Alie on this album who would produce the masterpiece Zambouya ten years later.
