The life of Hans Gál followed a unique path. Born in Austria in 1890, he enjoyed a brilliant career in interwar Germany, before emigrating to the UK in 1938 for understandable reasons, and setting up in Edinburgh, where he would stay until his death at the age of 97 – respected as a teacher and organiser, but by then somewhat forgotten as a composer. This album presents his chamber music works, covering a large part of his creative life. The Piano Quartet of 1914 still betrays the towering shadow of Brahms, even if not a single note of it could be from the master's pen, in terms of the piano writing, the teeming rhythms, the incessant contrasts and the harmony, which is a little coloured, too, by the Vienna of Mahler or the early Schönberg. The Three Sonatinas Op. 71 for violin and piano from 1956 show a very laconic language, now free of the mark of Brahms, let alone anyone else from that era – consider that Boulez had already struck his Marteau sans Maître two years earlier – who might resemble Tansman crossed with Mendelssohn. It's light music which has nothing at all about it of "light music", but which is written with clarity and elegance. The album closes on a rarity, the Sonatina in F Major of 1934, whose characteristics are not so far off the Three Sonatinas: delicious "Hausmusik". © SM/Qobuz
