The melodramatic snarl of Moonshake vocalist David Callahan can be something of an acquired taste, and that's only the first of many clues on Eva Luna—for those who may have discovered the band on a "Great Shoegaze Bands You May Have Forgotten About" list—that this was a band working well outside the prevailing sonic trends of early '90s indie rock. Although their first EP was drenched in thick slabs of guitar effects, loosely aligning them with the noisier end of the "shoegaze" spectrum, by Eva Luna’s release, the band had repositioned their sound as something of a chaotic, clattering version of Metal Box-era Public Image Ltd. Callahan's confrontationally nasal voice slices through throbbing, dub-inflected basslines, slashing guitar lines ride atop clanging percussion, and synths and sonic burbles provide a kosmische-style spaciness to the entire affair. For a band named after a Can song, this may not be too surprising, and although German psychedelia had been rediscovered by indie rock audiences of the era (thanks to Stereolab), few bands were explicitly mining the more abrasive fringes of that scene's sound. (Too Pure labelmates Th' Faith Healers came closest, but Moonshake were, by far, much more intensely experimental.) Still, Eva Luna is a remarkably dynamic and richly textured album, thanks to the contrast between Callahan's material and the approach of co-founder Margaret Fiedler, whose more warmly atmospheric songs provide a much-needed respite to some of the churning dissonance. While Callahan can make Moonshake sound like a red-eyed, white-knuckled version of the Birthday Party (as he does on "Wanderlust"), Fiedler-helmed cuts like the gentle-but-creepy "Bleach & Salt Water" and the drone-driven "Tar Baby" (which, oddly, evokes Th' Faith Healers more melodic material) greatly expands the group's sonic palette. The overall effect is a consistently challenging, and inarguably unique album, but also one that explores a wide range of post-punk/post-rock sounds. © Jason Ferguson/Qobuz
