When Courtney Barnett announced a new album, we jumped for joy: finally, a new ration of bittersweet songs to embellish the last barbecues of summer and to stock up on positive energy before the fall. We were soon disillusioned: End of the Day is actually an instrumental album, based on the soundtrack of the documentary Anonymous Club, which chronicles the fragilities and existential questionings of Courtney Barnett, the most endearing anti-rock star of her time. We regretfully miss out on her voice, her melodies, and her life-giving lyrics, which characterised her songs as some of the most beautiful of the past ten years.
The Australian is also an excellent guitarist, but it’s neither virtuosity nor an overload of energy that she explores on End of the Day. These 17 instrumental pieces that unite into one, turn their back on rock and go toward the ambient, the music of introspection. It’s the kind of music played by beginner guitarists in order to tame their instrument, to learn how to make a note resonate, and to experience the musical vibration of air and its effects. It’s also the kind of music played by guitarists who don’t have anything else to prove. At the beginning, “Start Somewhere” sounds like a Velvet Underground song, but very quickly (and also very slowly) it distances itself from any kind of pop format. Notes become more and more scarce. They stretch out and repeat. Courtney Barnett becomes unrecognisable in this pared down, contemplative music, which is undoubtedly what she was looking for in composing it for Anonymous Club. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
