E=MC2 (que en muchos sentidos es una réplica de su predecesor) se centra más en los sonidos, los ritmos y las texturas que en el desarrollo de las canciones, con lo que los elementos melódicos que mejor podrían atraer al público quedan en segundo plano. Teniendo en cuenta que uno de los distintivos de Carey ha sido siempre su amplio registro vocal, resulta un tanto extraño que este disco lo hayan producido así; no obstante, esto no sólo tiene como consecuencia que la música de Mariah resulte más moderna, sino que también camufla el hecho de que en parte estaba perdiendo terreno en la escena musical. Algunas veces, la producción de este disco se alía con una canción pegadiza y con cuerpo, como es el caso de "I'm That Chick", un fragmento bien trabajado de música disco que hace su aparición en la pieza Off the Wall y que resulta vertiginoso de tanta energía como desprende, y "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time", que deslumbra como no lo hace la mayor parte de E=MC2.
