Founded in 2010, the Metamorphosen Berlin is a small string orchestra consisting of leading chamber and orchestral musicians from throughout Germany and international competition winners. The program begins with one of Elgar's most endearing works, the Serenade for Strings, Op. 20. Still popular in programs today, along with Britten's Simple Symphony, Op. 4, and Peter Warlock's Capriol Suite, these are tonal works from a time where the music of continental Europe was veering toward chromaticism. The highlight on this album is the world premiere recording of the Metamorphosen Berlin's founder and conductor Wolfgang Emanuel Schmidt's arrangement of nine Elgar works for cello and strings. These works were written for piano solo or violin and piano, with Elgar's soon-to-be wife Alice as the dedicatee of several of the violin works. Schmidt does well with the scoring, and the melodies sing from his cello. Those who watched television in the late '90s and early 2000s will instantly recognize the encore, the first movement of Karl Jenkins' Palladio. Originally written as a commercial jingle, Jenkins returned to it a few years later and fashioned it into a three-movement work concerto grosso titled after Andrea Palladio, an architect from the Italian Renaissance. This work falls nicely into the Metamorphosen Berlin's wheelhouse and will doubtless leave listeners humming the tune well after its conclusion. Throughout this program of "eclectic" music from Great Britain, the talent of the ensemble's membership makes it seem like a much larger group is performing, and Sony Classical delivers excellent sound from the Teldex Studio in Berlin.
