¿Será posible? ¿Ese que canta con Janelle es quien parece ? Solo unos segundos de Dirty Computer bastan para identificar esa voz reconocible entre mil: ¡es la de Brian Wilson! El líder de los Beach Boys, como invitado de lujo en el tercer álbum de la artista nacida en Kansas City. Fascinante elección, y de lo más coherente, pues al igual que su máxima referencia sonora e intelectual, Prince, Janelle Monáe no ha limitado jamás su música a las fronteras del soul, el funk y el R&B. Un Prince con quien trabajó precisamente en este disco poco antes de que el genio de Minneapolis pasara a mejor vida en abril de 2016… Y una vez más, resulta imposible no establecer comparaciones entre este Dirty Computer y el Prince de las décadas 80/90, en especial cuando escuchamos el riff de guitarra de Kiss en Make Me Feel. Pero Janelle Monáe es lo suficientemente inteligente y, sobre todo, está lo suficientemente capacitada como para no caer en las trampas de la imitación de aquel a quien cita en todas las entrevistas como su mayor influencia y al que considera casi su gurú. Por otra parte, también le tira mucho Stevie Wonder, que participa en un tema de título tan explícito como Stevie’s Dream. El capítulo «featurings» de esta entrega 2018 se completa, por lo demás, con Pharrell Williams (I Got The Juice), Grimes (Pynk) y Zoe Kravitz (Screwed).
Pero por encima de todo, Dirty Computer es un disco poderosamente personal. Un autorretrato de su autora, que nos habla de quién es. De quién quiere ser y de cómo desea que su público la perciba. Mucho más que en sus dos trabajos anteriores, Janelle Monáe se desnuda aquí por completo. Musicalmente, ha depurado al máximo su estilo para firmar unas composiciones mucho más directas y, a menudo, de espíritu abiertamente pop. Despojadas al extremo y, por ello, de multiplicada eficacia. En conjunto, este tercer álbum desprende aromas indudablemente vintages, y por sus afinidades principescas cabría pensar más en los años 80 y 90 que en las décadas 2000/2010.
