Músicos de sesión, animales de escenario o simplemente «unos tíos a los que nadie recuerda pero que no han perdido su instinto asesino», para servirnos de una expresión de su líder, Chris Dave. Estamos hablando de The Drumhedz. Y sin voluntad de ser exhaustivos, conviene señalar que Chris Dave ha sido batería de Adele y Justin Bieber, de Dolly Parton y D'Angelo, de Sonny Rollins y A Tribe Called Quest. Seis nombres tomados al azar y que nos dan una idea del amplio currículum de este hombre… Pero ahora la banda cambia las sombras por la luz de los focos. Su álbum es antes que nada un no man’s land donde el concepto de género pierde cualquier sentido. Y como prueba, ahí están esos elementos de funk, soul, gospel, hip-hop y jazz, mezclados hasta hacerse indistinguibles y conformar una sólida masa de groove, lejos de convertirse en una mera e indigesta jam session. Entre los alrededor de cincuenta músicos que integran The Drumhedz encontramos, entre otros, a Pino Palladino (bajo), Isaiah Sharkey (guitarra), Cleo "Pookie" Sample (teclados), Sir Darryl Farris (voz) o Keyon Harrold (saxo), pero también a James Poyser (The Roots), Stokley Williams (Mint Condition) y Shafiq Husayn (Sa-Ra), sin olvidar a Anderson Paak, Bilal, DJ Jazzy Jeff o Phonte Coleman. Y el resultado –groovy hasta la médula– brilla con el mismo fulgor que tal listado de nombres: estamos ante una fusión sonora harto consistente rítmicamente donde cada instrumentista encuentra su espacio ideal.
