Warning: don’t listen to this album while driving. It’s the kind of album that lulls you into a trance. It alters the space-time continuum. It’s like a kind of shamanic ceremony. But let’s come back down to earth. Belesia is Ignacio Maria Gomez’s debut album. Search for “Belesia” online and you’ll find the contact details for a French plumber... There aren’t many clues as to where Ignacio Maria Gomez is from either – Argentina perhaps? Nor where he’s going – West Africa maybe? Or where he’s been for that matter, apart from Brasil and France, where he recorded the album. Like the Brazilian Tiganá Santana, Ignacio Maria Gomez covers his tracks. Or rather, he paves his own path, taking us through a myriad of sounds and atmospheres. Next to him, we find the cellist Vincent Ségal, kora player Ballaké Sissoko, singer Cynthia Abraham and musician Loy Ehrlich. Gathering around the Maria Gomez’s acoustic guitar, the musicians blend together, flowing along like a meandering river. It’s difficult to say whether we’re in Latin America or Africa. Or both. Brazilian rhythms float to the surface throughout. It’s hard to detect what language Ignacio sings in, though it’s soft and a little melancholic, sounding like it’s made to be set to samba music composed in a milky sunlight. © Stéphane Deschamps/Qobuz
