This release by pianist Andrew von Oeyen was planned as an all-Beethoven album in 2020, intended to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth, but in his notes to this Warner Classics release, von Oeyen writes of turning to Bach during the coronavirus pandemic. Among other points, he notes that "Bach's music was ideal for a concert-less world, since much of it was neither written for nor dependent upon an audience: in fact, silence often more naturally follows a Bach work than applause." He had never recorded Bach or performed him much, but he strikes a nice interior note in the French Overture, BWV 831, that opens the program, landing between pianistic and harpsichord-on-the-piano Bach and bringing out a bit of playfulness that fits well with the French style of the work. He also scores with a pair of Bach arrangements by Wilhelm Kempff at the end that display his gift for limpid melody; one, of the Siciliana from the possibly spurious Flute Sonata No. 2 in E flat major, BWV 1031, has become a sort of hit. As for the Beethoven that von Oeyen planned, his playful quality serves him very well in the Piano Sonata No. 13 in E flat major, Op. 27, No. 1 ("Sonata quasi una fantasia"). In the Piano Sonata No. 23 in F minor, Op. 57 ("Appassionata"), he is less distinctive, although every note in this virtuoso work is in place. With fine sound from a French studio, von Oeyen offers a contemplative release for listeners during the pandemic and beyond.
