Cumplidos los 65 David Byrne se baja de la bici (su gran pasión) para editar su primer álbum en solitario en catorce años. Firmado a medias con su viejo amigo Brian Eno, con el que comenzó a trabajar en los tiempos de Talking Heads, American Utopia es uno de esos patchwork en los que Byrne no tiene rival. Y es que a este antiguo alumno de la escuela de diseño de Rhode Island le encanta cruzar géneros, fusionar sonoridades de todos los continentes y derribar toda frontera estilística. Tras hacer punk funk, salsa, mixes electro, discos con gente tan diferente como Fatboy Slim o Annie Clark –alias St. Vincent–, música para cine y ballet y alrededor de otras 12.547 cosas más, regresa ahora a un formato de canción una pizca más clásico. Pero solo una pizca...
Esencialmente pop, estas composiciones aparecen constantemente atravesadas por pinceladas electro, world o funky, recordando a menudo las texturas características de su antiguo grupo. Con unas letras siempre afiladas y un punto excéntricas, David Byrne confía en el resurgimiento de una América distinta a la de Donald Trump. Con la colaboración por aquí y por allá de algunos «jovenzuelos» como Sampha, TTY y Happa Isaiah Barr de Onyx Collective, nos entrega su mejor trabajo en solitario en varios lustros.
