The music of Paul Reade (1943-1997) couldn't be called neo-tonal, for it belongs to a tradition of tonal, melodic music that never went away in Britain. The Suite from the music for The Victorian Kitchen Garden was written for BBC television, and though it could have been written a century ago, it is pleasing and well made. The songs (the operatic voice of Pumeza Matshikiza is not really suited to these), too, are in a conservative, folkish style harking back to Joseph Canteloube, and there is an arrangement of the old El cant des ocells that Pablo Casals would use to close concerts. The abstract instrumental pieces are in a somewhat more modern style; think Vaughan Williams or, at times, Malcolm Arnold. The highlight to these ears is the Serenata for wind sextet, with clever interactions among the paired clarinets, bassoons, and horns looking back to Mozart's wind serenades and to the outdoor musical roots of the serenade genre. There are also two concertos, one a single-movement piece for bassoon that was part of an unfinished work, and these are nowhere less than engaging. The various soloists (flutist Philippa Davies is a light player in the finest old tradition) are agile and lively in music that would have made an ideal component of the BBC's light music programming of the last century, and that has lost none of its charm. The album landed on classical best-seller charts in the summer of 2023.
