Aunque 4:13 Dream empiece con el romanticismo agorero de "Underneath the Stars", esta minipieza épica de ritmo lento y arrastrado no es más que un amago que por un momento oculta el que es el disco más pop de The Cure desde Wish (1992). Sin embargo, a pesar de la preponderancia de tempos vivaces y sonsonetes, no hay nada en 4:13 Dream que resulte especialmente leve, tal vez porque Robert Smith se inclina por compensar estas canciones con una gran dosis de angustia. En "The Reasons Why", la canción más pegadiza del disco, Smith canta sobre el suicidio sin el menor atisbo de ironía. La producción limpia pone de relieve los gestos estilizados de Smith. No obstante, enterradas hacia el final de 4:13 Dream hay dos canciones con estribillos que penetran muy adentro: "The Perfect Boy" y "This. Here and Now. With You."
