MAN POWER

Geoff Kirkwood, the British DJ and producer who goes by the name Man Power, makes spacy, sparkling house tracks influenced by disco, post-punk, and electro. One of the founders of Last Waltz, a club night as well as a production team, Kirkwood initially started Man Power as an anonymous project, releasing a self-titled debut album in 2015 along with EPs on labels like Hivern Discs, Throne of Blood, and ESP Institute. He founded a label called Me Me Me and kept up a busy touring and release schedule, additionally releasing haunting soundscapes as Bed Wetter and zoned-out techno as MPX. He also collaborated with Juan Maclean as Juan Power, and worked with singer Amy Douglas on a 2020 single for DFA. He's continued expanding his extensive discography with releases like the 2020 full-length Economy and the 2022 EP Closing the Loop. Initially calling himself Geoff Leopard, Kirkwood formed Last Waltz with Mick Rolfe and Lee Forster, and started a weekly residency at Newcastle Upon Tyne club Madame Koo during the late 2000s. Kirkwood was also a resident and promoter at a night called Dada at Cosmic Ballroom, another venue in the same city. Last Waltz began releasing neo-disco and house tracks and remixes in 2011, with singles appearing on labels like Endless Flight and Futureboogie. Kirkwood started DJing under the name Man Power, and his first two EPs, Kiloton and Flacid Trax, both appeared in 2014. The Throne of Blood-issued EP Trans directly preceded Man Power's self-titled debut album, which was released by Correspondant in 2015. Kirkwood launched the Me Me Me label with his 2016 single "Tachyon," and further material appeared on labels like ESP Institute, Optimo Trax, and DGTL Records. "Do It Thin," a dance-pop collaboration with Berlin's Private Agenda, appeared on Skint in 2019. Man Power launched the Now Now Now sublabel with the digital release This Is Not an Album, and issued a white label techno EP as MPX. Kirkwood teamed up with Juan Maclean to form Juan Power, releasing the Crescendo EP on Life and Death in 2019, followed by The Juan Power LP in 2020. Initially planned for release as two EPs on a newly formed label, the duo decided to digitally self-issue the material right as the COVID-19 pandemic hit and touring became impossible. Kirkwood also digitally released his second Man Power album, Economy, which was originally intended to be packaged in a biodegradable shopping bag rather than a traditional record sleeve. He remained highly productive throughout the year, issuing EPs with titles like Twitter Makes Everyone Hate You and Facebook Makes You Hate Everyone, in addition to appearing on DFA with the Amy Douglas collaboration "Flashing Lights"/"Acid God" and debuting his experimental alias Bed Wetter with the album Billy Mill Is Dead. The 2021 EP Multi Periodic Oscillations marked Man Power's first vinyl release in two years, and the project continued with releases like 2022's Closing the Loop.
