Janusz Wawrowski
Janusz Wawrowski is a leading figure among the younger generation of violinists in Poland. Charismatic and innovative, he records for the Warner Classics label and is making an impact beyond Eastern Europe as a performer as well.
Wawrowski was born on March 22, 1982, in Konin in central Poland. He attended the Chopin University of Music in Warsaw, where his teacher was Mirosław Ławrynowicz, and he took further classes from Salvatore Accardo and Yair Kless. An early indicator of his talents came when he began, while still a student, to perform all of Paganini's 24 Caprices, Op. 1, in a single concert evening. He made his recording debut with those fearsomely difficult works in 2007, on an album released by Polish Radio and Television; it was reissued by Warner Classics after his signing to that label.
Supported by the Polish Ministry of Culture in his studies, Wawrowski rode major Eastern and Central European prizes into a promising concert career. In Poland, he took first prize at the Stanislaw Serwaczynski National Competition of Young Violinists, and third prize at the Louis Spohr Competition in Freiburg and the David Oistrakh International Violin Competition in Odessa. Wawrowski has performed with the Warsaw Philharmonic, Sinfonia Varsovia, and the Orquesta Sinfónica Simón Bolívar in Venezuela, among other top groups. His recital schedule has brought him to the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Tel Aviv Opera House, and more. An enthusiastic chamber musician, Wawrowski has an ongoing collaboration with pianist Robert Morawski and has served as the artistic director of the Music on the Heights International Chamber Music Festival in Zakopane, Poland. In concert, he often appears in traditional Polish dress.
In 2013, Wawrowski recorded the album Aurora for EMI Classics. Signed by Warner Classics that same year, he released Sequenza, a collection of virtuoso works of the 20th and 21st centuries, in 2016. That was followed in late 2017 by Brillante, pairing works by Henryk Wieniawski and Max Bruch, and Hidden Violin in 2018. In 2021, Wawrowski returned with Phoenix, an album featuring the world premiere of Ludomir Rózycki's World War II-era Violin Concerto, Op. 70. Wawrowski is a lecturer at the Chopin University, his alma mater.
