Jacob Mühlrad
Composer Jacob Mühlrad has seen his works performed in many countries by leading orchestras and choirs. He has also collaborated with pop musicians.
Mühlrad was born on April 9, 1991, in Stockholm. He is of Jewish background, with three of his grandparents having survived the Holocaust, and several of his works explore Jewish themes. Mühlrad became interested in music at age 15 when he found a broken synthesizer and began experimenting with it. Due to autism, he had trouble learning to read and write music, but he persisted and began studying with Sven-David Sandström. Mühlrad attended the Royal College of Music in Stockholm and went on for a master's degree at the Royal College of Music in London. He experienced success in his early twenties with the choral work Anim Zemirot (2013), which has found its way into the repertories of many European choirs. When he was 24, he became the youngest composer ever to have his music performed at the Royal Swedish Opera. Mühlrad's solo cello work Pan was performed at New York's Carnegie Hall in 2016. Mühlrad received nonmusical recognition when Elle magazine named him Sweden's best-dressed man in 2019.
Mühlrad's music has been performed at the National Portrait Gallery in London, Victoria Hall in Singapore, and the Orpheum in Vancouver, where he partnered with the Vancouver Chamber Choir. His chamber music collaborators include clarinetist Martin Fröst. On the pop side, he has worked with the electronic music supergroup Swedish House Mafia, penning a symphonic version of the group's hit One (Your Name), entitled One Symphony. Mühlrad's debut as an orchestral composer came in 2021 with REMS ("Rapid Eye Movement Sleep"), commissioned by the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic. Mühlrad has also written film music and his recording debut came on the major Warner Classics label in 2022 with the soundtrack album for the film Burn All My Letters. The Royal Stockholm Philharmonic's recording of REMS appeared on Warner Classics in 2023.
