Broken Witt Rebels
British rockers Broken Witt Rebels combine the bluesy, raucous sound of classic Southern rock with contemporary production polish, synths, and electronic elements, as on their 2020 major-label debut album, OK Hotel.
The band formed in Birmingham, England, comprising school friends Danny Core (vocals, guitar) and Luke Davis (bass), who later recruited James Tranter (guitar), and James Dudley (drums). They took their name from a selection of random words in newspaper headlines. Having grown up listening to classic rock acts like Queen, the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac, Black Sabbath, and Led Zeppelin, they saw themselves as part of a lineage of American-influenced Northern English rock. After establishing themselves locally by playing the club circuit, they made their recording debut in 2016 with the EP Georgia Pine; that year they won best rock act at the inaugural Unsigned Music Awards. In 2017 they released their eponymous debut album, a compilation of their previous EPs with some new tracks; relentless touring in the U.K. and the U.S. built their profile. The album's success led to a major-label deal with Spinefarm the following year, which released their sophomore effort, OK Hotel, in 2020; on it, they augmented their dirty, bluesy, soulful rock sound with contemporary production polish, synths, and electronic elements.
