Theophilus London may have been master of the single since 2018, but Bebey is still pretty surprising, firstly in its subject matter but also in the eclectic nature of its collaborations. After a few self-produced EPs and two albums unanimously acclaimed by the critics, here is a third album albeit six years after the (Qobuzissime!) Vibes. Taking on the 1984 Nigerian funk hit Only You by Steve Monite, the first single featured Kevin Parker from Tame Impala and came out in October 2018. Then, in 2019, came another collaboration with the Australian: Whiplash, already in the works since 2016, which saw the New Yorker rap over Parker’s psych-synths. Then came Seals, the more R&B Pretty with Ian Isiah, the Caribbean hues of Cuba and even a first version of Whoop Tang Flow with Raekwon from Wu-Tang Clan. These thirteen tracks arranged over forty-nine minutes are well-balanced, with the clear goal of making you dance. From the steel pan reggae bursts on Bebey to the gospel flair of Seals, the mumble rap with Lil Yachty, the Wu-Tang style gangsta rap or the eccentric pop tangents featuring Ariel Pink on Revenge, the Trinidad and Tobago native excels in the fusion of genres just as he does in the expert crafting of meticulously chosen textures and sounds.
