A surprisingly versatile project that draws its influences from folk music, Eastern brass bands, pop, and soft indie rock, Beirut began life as a one-man-band. The repertoire of the softly spoken Zach Condon, a multi-instrumentalist and globetrotter, has been inspired by his extensive travels. Celebrating its 15th birthday with a basic compilation would have been too easy. Instead of delivering an album that smacks of déjà vu, Condon decided to delve into his unreleased archives and dust off his never-before-released early recordings. This quest will take him a lot further than he could ever have imagined.
Artifacts is an album of two parts, combining compilations from his early days with more recent songs that the artist considers to be essential to the band’s journey, despite having only been written recently. More power to him. Despite the years that separate some of these tracks, this treasure chest offers real coherence and consistency thanks to its excellent remastering work. From the sublime Elephant Gun that starts the album off, all the way to Babylon that brings it to a close, each song is a reminder of Beirut's uncanny ability to make their listeners feel both melancholy and joy… and everything in between.
The beautiful melodies soak the whole album in raw emotion, no matter if they’re purely acoustic (such as the accordion in Your Sails) or electronic (such as Le Phare du Cap Bon which features an echoing keyboard that could almost be considered dub). Beirut is the soothing sound of a totally unique band, one that’s capable of decorating electronic music with smatterings of folk sounds (Irrlichter) and turning world music into smooth pop; all without ever forgetting its roots.
