Con tan sólo 36 minutos, Accelerate es insolentemente escaso, es profuso en las guitarras de Peter Buck y los coros de Mike Mills, sus canciones no se dispersan, te atacan. Incluso los temas acústicos suenan como temas de rock, quizá porque hayan escuchado la inquietante y maltrecha gracia de "Swan Swan H". Accelerate presenta a R.E.M. reconectándose con su música, con lo que les hizo tocar rock & roll en un principio, en vez de resucitar metódicamente un mito apagado.
