Aaron Copland est probablement le compositeur nord-américain le plus important du XXe siècle. Il y en a d'autres bien sûr, Ives, B. Herrmann, Carl Ruggles, Gershwin, Bernstein, mais nul doute que Copland a su exprimer une part de la singularité des Etats-Unis, nouveau continent créateur. L'oeuvre de Copland est d'une grande diversité, et aux côtés des oeuvres assez populaires (Rodeo, Appalacchian Spring, Symphonie No. 3), on trouve dans la même veine des chefs-d'oeuvre plus méconnus, The Tender Land (opéra sur la vie rurale américaine, Copland en a extrait une suite de concert) ou Quiet City (sorte de poème symphonique moderne et urbain, d'une poésie inouïe), qu'il faut impérativement découvrir. Mais à côté de ce Copland "populiste" et profondément lyrique, il y a le moderne, celui qui aura fait siens les paysages rocailleux, arides des grandes étendues américains. Les déroutantes "Connotations", le très étrange "Inscape", les dynamiques "Orchestral Variations", la "Piano Fantasy" restent des partitions aux ramifications étendues, qui ne se dévoileront pas à la première écoute, et où les "Old American Songs" ont disparu.
