Papermoon

Viennese pop duo Papermoon was founded in 1991 by guitarist Christof Straub and singer Edina Thalhammer. Their mixture of folk and pop quickly gathered attention when Austrian radio station Ö3 played their song "Night After Night" on heavy rotation in 1992. The group landed a record contract with BMG and released their debut album, Tell Me a Poem, the same year. The album reached double platinum, selling over 100,000 units and reaching number one on the Austrian album charts (the single "Tell Me a Poem" reached number four and remained in the charts for 17 weeks), but the two follow-up albums, The World in Lucy's Eyes (1994) and Papermoon (1996), were less successful, even though they both reached gold. In 1996, Thalhammer left the group, and she was replaced by Roumina Straub and then by Barbara Pichler, but apart from a best-of compilation with three new tracks (2002's Past and Present) and a new single ("Doop Doop"), no new material was released. When Thalhammer's solo project Tau, founded in 2002, proved unsuccessful, she returned to the group in 2004. The band has successfully released several new albums since, and their 2005 release True Love was awarded the Amadeus Austrian Music Award in 2006. Their 2007 album Verzaubert is the first release to feature exclusively German lyrics -- some of them versions of earlier Papermoon singles.
