Chaque conte de fées a son personnage maudit, son héros incompris, voire oublié. Bilal pourrait bien endosser ce costume. Non pas que le chanteur de Philadelphie ait été éradiqué de la surface de la planète groove (il est sur Institutionalized et These Walls sur To Pimp a Butterfly de Kendrick Lamar !), juste que son talent n’a jamais vraiment été reconnu à sa juste valeur. Ou que ses albums n’ont pas été des sans-faute… Phillie donc. La cité des Roots ou de Jill Scott notamment. Des voix qui parlent au Bilal d’à peine 22 ans qui publie 1st Born Second en juillet 2001. Comme lui parlent aussi celles de Curtis Mayfield et Prince, auxquels son falsetto fait furieusement penser. Ce premier album est finalement parfois presque plus rap que soul. La présence de Dr Dre et des Roots, comme celle de Mos Def et Common sur Reminisce, amplifie la sensation. Mais tous les marqueurs de la nu soul sont bien là, dans les sons, les mots, les rythmes. Si certains l’ont taxé de sous-D’Angelo, il a démontré son originalité lorsque son chant, plus versatile, atteignait les rivages du jazz voire du blues. Malgré leurs bons moments, les trois albums qui suivront (Airtight's Revenge en 2010, A Love Surreal en 2013 et In Another Life en 2015) n’atteindront jamais la profondeur et la richesse de ce premier essai. © Marc Zisman/Qobuz
