Skilla Baby
Detroit rapper Skilla Baby brings street-hardened lyricism and clean production together for a sound that's both smooth and hard-hitting at once. With the help of mentor Sada Baby, he quickly went from independently releasing mixtapes and singles to being one of the more buzzed-about rappers of his scene and signing on with Geffen Records in 2022 for the release of We Eat the Most, an EP that was later expanded into an album-length project. His 2024 mixtape, The Coldest, broke into the Billboard charts.
Skilla Baby was born Trevon Gardner and raised in Detroit. He was rapping by his teenage years, inspired as much by the sounds of rappers like Meek Mill and Lil Wayne as he was by the vintage soul and R&B of his father's record collection and even the poetry and literature that came out of the Harlem Renaissance. When his aims to become a college basketball player didn't pan out, he switched his focus to music around 2016, eventually releasing singles like 2019's "Trevon" and early mixtapes including 2019's Push That Shit Out Skilla and 2020's Crack Music that garnered some local attention. By now he had caught the attention of fellow Detroit emcee Sada Baby, who showed Skilla the ropes and helped guide him through the business side of the music industry. The rapper grew with each subsequent release, and by 2022, major labels were competing to sign him. Skilla Baby ultimately chose to work with Geffen Records, which released his 2022 EP, We Eat the Most. The next year, Skilla Baby teamed up with Tee Grizzley for the collaborative mixtape Controversy as well as linking up with multi-platinum rap star G. Herbo for the joint single "B'CUZ." Capitalizing on this momentum, We Eat the Most was re-released in an expanded form featuring new material with BabyTron, Luh Tyler, and Rylo Rodriguez. Collaborations on songs with City Girls, Yung Miami, BM Riqq, and others followed, and in 2024, Skilla Baby released the mixtape The Coldest. The project featured appearances from DaBaby, Flo Milli, NoCap, Polo G, and other big names, and debuted at the number 175 spot on Billboard's Top 200 chart.
