PUBLIQuartet
The PUBLIQuartet is dedicated to the performance of contemporary chamber music, including new works and novel interpretations of classics. The group is noted for its efforts to draw new audiences to contemporary music through improvisational aspects in its music, which includes influences from jazz and world musical traditions.
The PUBLIQuartet was formed in 2010 and is based in New York City. The members are violinists Curtis Stewart and Jannina Norpoth, violist Nick Revel, and cellist Hamilton Berry (who replaced Amanda Gookin). The group quickly made a splash with a 2013 New Music/New Places award from the Concert Artists Guild, and in 2019, the group won the prestigious Visionary Award from Chamber Music America, given for outstanding and innovative approaches to contemporary classical, jazz, and world chamber music. The group made its debut on recordings in 2015 along with the Soldier Quartet on the album In Four Color: Music for String Quartet by David Soldier. Later that year, the PUBLIQuartet released its solo debut with a self-titled album on the CAG label. In 2019, the group's album Freedom and Faith made its debut at the top of Billboard magazine's classical sales chart.
The PUBLIQuartet became known for innovative programming that mixed established 20th century repertory with new music and improvisational treatments that reimagined existing works. The latter were sometimes included under a MIND|THE|GAP rubric that featured group-composed works. These included Bird in Paris, mixing elements of the music of Charlie Parker and Claude Debussy and What Is American? based on Dvořák's String Quartet No. 12 in F major, Op. 96 ("American"). The latter was featured on the PUBLIQuartet's 2022 album What Is American, issued on the Bright Shiny Things label. The PUBLIQuartet has appeared at venues ranging from Carnegie Hall to the Newport Jazz Festival to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The group has held residencies at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in Manhattan and the National Sawdust club in Brooklyn.
