Junior Campbell
b. William Campbell, 31 May 1947, Glasgow, Scotland. The former lead singer of Marmalade began a promising solo career in 1972 with the stirring ‘Hallelujah Freedom’. Combining much of the melody of Marmalade, this soul-influenced single reached the UK Top 10. The following year similar success came with ‘Sweet Illusion’. The chart singles stopped and Campbell’s direction moved towards back-room production. In the early 80s he wrote the theme music to award-winning UK television children’s programmes, notably Thomas The Tank Engine (narrated by Ringo Starr) and Tugs, and he continues to compose for television drama. His solo album was reissued in 2001 with a bonus album of rarities and unissued material.
