Emicida
Leandro Roque de Oliveira, best known by his stage name, Emicida, was born on August 17, 1985, and has since grown to become one of the leading artists in Brazil's underground hip-hop scene. Hailing from the streets of São Paulo, his journey began early in the 1990s, drawing inspiration from dance parties organized by his parents. Despite facing several challenges throughout his life, including the tragic loss of his father during his childhood, Emicida found solace in rhyming and made his official debut in 2008 with the single "Triunfo." The song was later included in his debut mixtape, 2009's Pra Quem Já Mordeu Um Cachorro Por Comida, Até Que Eu Cheguei Longe... Over the following years, he continued to hone his craft and grow a substantial following thanks to tracks like "Rua Augusta" from his second mixtape, Emicídio (2010), and "Zica, Vai Lá..." from his EP Doozicabraba e a Revolução Silenciosa (2011). Featuring cameos by Tulipa Ruiz, Pitty, MC Guimê, and Juçara Marçal, his studio debut O Glorioso Retorno de Quem Nunca Esteve Aqui was released in 2013 via the indie label Laboratório Fantasma. It was followed by 2015's Sobre Crianças, Quadris, Pesadelos e Lições de Casa..., which featured a duet with Caetano Veloso on the single "Baiana" and obtained gold certification in Brazil. In 2017, the track "A Chapa É Quente!," included in his third full-length album Língua Franca, was nominated for Best Urban Song at the Latin Grammys. AmarElo, Emicida's fourth studio effort, featured a veritable who's who of Brazilian music, from MPB legend Marcos Valle to urban artist and drag queen Pabllo Vittar. A second Latin Grammy nomination ensued in 2021 when his Ivete Sangalo collaboration "Mulheres Não Têm Que Chorar" was selected to compete in the Best Portuguese Language Song category. Following the release of a self-titled EP in 2022, Emicida joined forces with singer Pitty on the single "Teto de Vidro," which entered the streaming Top 100 in his native Brazil.
