Chet Doxas
Canadian-born saxophonist Chet Doxas is an adept and probing soloist known for inventive post-bop and modern creative jazz. Along with co-leading the Jimmy Giuffre-inspired Riverside ensemble with trumpeter Dave Douglas, he garnered widespread acclaim with 2017's Juno Award-winning Rich in Symbols. He is a member of the Brooklyn ensemble LandLine and in 2021 released You Can't Take It with You with pianist Ethan Iverson.
Raised in Montreal, Doxas grew up in a musical family with a father who worked as a professional musician, teacher, and recording engineer. His father encouraged him and his older brother, drummer Jim Doxas, to pursue music from a young age. By the time he was 18, Chet was playing regular gigs with his band and as a freelancer around Montreal. He studied music at McGill University, where he earned his undergraduate and graduate degrees. In 2010, he made his debut as leader with Big Sky, followed three years later by Dive. Doxas eventually relocated to New York City, where he began co-leading the Riverside ensemble with trumpeter Dave Douglas, drawing upon their shared love of the music of Jimmy Giuffre. He has also performed with such artists as Carla Bley, John Abercrombie, Rufus Wainwright, Maria Schneider, and Oliver Jones.
In 2017, Doxas released the eponymous debut from his band Rich in Symbols, in which he composes music inspired by his love of visual art. Rich in Symbols garnered a Juno Award nomination for Best Jazz Solo Album. Doxas is also a member of the Brooklyn-based LandLine with pianist Jacob Sacks, bassist Zack Lober, and drummer Vinnie Sperrazza. In 2021, he released You Can't Take It with You, a trio date featuring former Bad Plus pianist Ethan Iverson and bassist Thomas Morgan.
