Brigada Victor Jara

The traditional music of Portugal is preserved and reinterpreted by eight piece, Portuguese, band, Brigada Victor Jara. Initially featuring traditional acoustic instruments, the band has increasingly incorporated modern instrumentation including synthesizer and electronic keyboards. Taking their name from the assassinated Chilean revolutionary, Victor Jara, Brigada Victor Jara was formed in 1975 by young musicians interested in exploring their cultural roots. For many years, the band worked with influential ethnomusicologist Michel Giaccomentti (1929 -- 1990). The group has collaborated with numerous theatrical and dance ensembles and with GEFAC (Grupo Ethnografica De Folklore De La Academia De Coimbra). In 1989, Brigada Victor Jara collaborated with choregraphre Joao Cuatro on a musical production, "Mondo Formose". The band celebrated their twentieth anniversary with a December 1995 concert at the Luiz Theater in Lisboa.
