Andrè Schuen
Versatile and charismatic, baritone Andrè Schuen is a prominent figure among his generation of opera stars from Italy. In 2020, he was signed to the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label.
Schuen was born in 1984 in La Val, in northern Italy's South Tyrol region. His native tongue was a small regional language called Ladin, and he also grew up speaking Italian and German, both commonly spoken in the area; he has sung professionally in all three languages. His family members were multilingual, and there were several musicians among them. Schuen's first instrument was the cello, which he played for many years, but, switching to singing, he decided to enroll at the Salzburg Mozarteum in Austria, where he studied with soprano Horiana Baristeanu and took lessons in lieder and oratorio singing from baritone Wolfgang Holzmair. Schuen was already performing widely by the time he graduated from the Mozarteum in 2010, appearing in 2009 in Luigi Nono's Al gran sole carico d’amore. From 2010 to 2014, he was a member of the Graz Opera Company and also performed vocal and choral music on the side, appearing with the Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle in 2011.
Schuen made a major splash with his appearances at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna in 2014 in a series of productions of Mozart operas conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt; he sang the roles of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Guglielmo in Così fan tutte. Since then, he has appeared at various major houses and has also made an impact as a lieder singer, often appearing with pianist Daniel Heide; the pair has performed at London's Wigmore Hall, among other venues. His 2021 plans included a performance as Papageno in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at the Wiener Staatsoper and performances of the three major Schubert song cycles with Heide at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg.
In 2015, Schuen made his recording debut with Heide, releasing an album of songs by Schumann, Wolf, and Frank Martin on the CAvi-music label. He made three more albums on that label before joining Deutsche Grammophon's roster and releasing a recording, again with Heide, of Schubert's song cycle Die schöne Müllerin, in 2021.
