Glim Spanky
Glim Spanky are an eccentric Japanese double act with strong influences from the western psychedelic rock and blues of the 1960s and 1970s.
The band was formed by rhythm guitarist Remi Matsuo as a covers act in 2007. After a little jostling around with the lineup, Hiroki Kamemoto joined as lead guitarist alongside Kazuya Ozawa and Taku Mishima and the band began playing original material penned by Matsuo.
Kazuya Ozawa and Taku Mishima played with the band for a few years but left in 2010, leaving Remi Matsuo and Hiroki Kamemoto to carry on as a duo. The pair, now based in Tokyo, put out their first mini album, 'Music Freak', in 2013 through Space Shower Music and followed up with their major label debut, the mini-album 'Shoso', the following year.
Glim Spanky's first single, 'Homero yo', followed in 2015 and made it to number 20 on the Billboard Japan Hot 100 thanks in part to its use as the theme song for the TV show 'Taiko Mochi no Tatsujin ~Tadashii no Home-kata~'. Nominations for awards started to follow, as did more use of the band's music as TV themes.
Glim Spanky's first full-length album, 'Sunrise Journey', was released in July 2015. It included the track 'Wonder Alone', the closing credits theme of the anime 'Himitsu Kessha Taka no Tsume DO', for which Matsuo and Kamemoto voiced characters based on themselves.
2016 saw the release of Glim Spanky's second album, 'Next One', which cracked the Oricon top ten. They repeated the trick with 2017's 'Bizarre Carnival' and with 2018's 'Looking for the Magic'.
