Tyler Duncan
Baritone Tyler Duncan has had a varied career in opera and concert music in his native Canada, in the U.S., and in Europe. He records for the Bridge label.
Duncan was born in 1976 or 1977 in the northern city of Prince George, British Columbia. As a baby, he heard a Scandinavian grandmother sing songs by Grieg and Sibelius, and he first joined a choir when he was eight. His family moved to Port Alberni and then to Victoria on Vancouver Island; Duncan continued to sing in choirs there and also took up the trombone. He credits strong high school music programs for his choice of career, but he didn't begin classical vocal training until he tried to enroll in a jazz class at Vancouver Community College and found that it has been canceled; he enrolled in a classical music course instead, and teachers discovered his aptitude. Duncan went on to the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, graduating in 1998. There, he met pianist Erika Switzer when she served as accompanist for one of his voice lessons; the two married and have frequently performed together. After graduation, they moved to Germany, where Duncan studied in Augsburg with Edith Wiens and in Munich with Helmut Deutsch. In 2005, he made his recording debut on the album 21st Century Instrumental Solos. Several prizes, including first place in the 2007 Prix International Pro Musicis Award competition, the 2008 New York Oratorio Society Competition, and the 2010 Joy in Singing Competition, raised Duncan's profile, and he began to build a successful career in song recitals and oratorio, waiting to undertake opera until his voice was stronger. In addition to Germany, he toured in Sweden and South Africa.
Duncan and Switzer returned to North America, settling in upstate New York. In the 2010s, Duncan's operatic career began in earnest. He has appeared in several productions at New York's Metropolitan Opera, including Puccini's Madama Butterfly, Bizet's Carmen, and Verdi's Otello. He made multiple appearances at the Spoleto Festival USA, and in Canada, he appeared as Dandini in Rossini's La Cenerentola. Duncan is committed to new opera, having sung the role of Raymond in Nigredo Hotel by Nic Gotham at City Opera Vancouver and performing in the world premiere of Jonathan Berger's Leonardo at the 92nd Street Y in New York. After several more parts on ensemble recordings, Duncan made his solo debut in 2018 on the Centrediscs label on the album Andrew Staniland: Go by Contraries, accompanied by Switzer. In 2020, the pair moved to Bridge for the album English Songs à la française. They returned in 2023 on Bridge with the album A Left Coast, featuring songs by Vancouver composers.
