Theresia Orchestra
The international youth orchestra Theresia is devoted specifically to the performance of Classical-era music on period instruments. Ensemble members undergo training from senior musicians but also perform as a group and have made several recordings.
Theresia (often stylized THERESIA and also sometimes billed as the Theresia Orchestra) was founded in Lodi, Italy, in 2012 at the behest of a group of patrons of orchestral music. The orchestra is named for the Austrian empress Maria Theresia (1717-1780). Theresia comprises musicians under age 28, all of them specialists in historical performance at top European universities and music schools, and it is aimed at preparing them for professional life after their academic studies and providing new professional assets and skills. The orchestra is made up of students actually enrolled in the program, who rotate from year to year; senior musicians provide guidance but do not actually perform. The group has been led by a variety of conductors. In addition to performing, the group has made several recordings, the first of which was an appearance in the Johann Mattheson opera Boris Goudenow on the CPO label in 2022. The group is partly funded by the European Commission.
Theresia's individual terms, several of which are held each year, begin with a student residence and studies (encompassing about 1,000 hours of classes) under top soloists and conductors. The ensemble goes on to perform at halls, theaters, and festivals around Europe; performances in the year 2023 included those at several Italian venues, the Haus der Musik in Innsbruck, Austria, and the National Theater and Opera in Warsaw. Theresia also operates an Ambassadorship Programme aimed at the dissemination of historical performance practices and classical music, more generally among new and youthful audiences in various European countries. Theresia has gone on to make several more recordings, including a video of Domenico Cimarosa's opera Le astuzie femminili in 2022 and, in 2024, an album of overtures by Joseph Martin Kraus, conducted by Claudio Astronio on the CPO label.
