Santiago Cerón

Son singer, musician, and songwriter Santiago Cerón was born in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic on July 25, 1940. During the course of his career, he became one of the first Dominican performers to achieve international success. His career began as an amateur singer on La Voz Dominicana, the official radio/television station of the Dominican Republic. He relocated to New York at the age of 22, where he met Cuban musician, songwriter, and bandleader Arsenio Rodríguez. Santiago Cerón began working with Rodríguez, who introduce him to Cuban music, and worked with him between 1964 and 1966. Santiago Cerón then spent time performing or recording with Luis Kalaff y sus Alegres Domincanos Orchestra, Pete Rodríguez, Tony Pabón, the Johnny Pacheco Orchestra, Larry Harlow, Adalberto Santiago, and Héctor Lavoe. He released his debut solo album, Tumbando Puertas, in 1980, which was quickly followed by Navegando End Sabor (1980) and Canta Si Va’ Cantar (1981). With a catalog that includes more than 30 albums, Santiago Cerón became very popular in Latin America and in American cities with large Latin populations. His many other popular albums included Yo Soy La Ley (1983), Siempre Duro (1985), La Vecina (1989), Mi Campeon Jukin (1994), and Cerón (2009). Santiago Cerón died on May 10, 2011.
