Jérôme Correas
Jérôme Correas is a fixture on the Baroque music scene, a versatile figure who is noted as a conductor, harpsichordist, and bass-baritone singer. He is also a significant educator.
Correas was born on August 3, 1966, in Les Lilas on the outskirts of Paris. He took up the piano at age five. A turning point in his musical life came in 1982 when he met harpsichordist and musicologist Antoine Geoffroy-Dechaume and began taking harpsichord lessons from him. Correas studied literature at the Lycée Malherbe in Caen and went on to the Sorbonne University, studying history and art history, but he continued to perform on the side, mostly as a singer. In 1987, Correas had another important meeting, this time with William Christie, the conductor of the pioneering Baroque ensemble Les Arts Florissants. He enrolled at the Conservatoire de Paris in Christie's Baroque music class, earning a first prize, and went on to study opera singing with Xavier Depraz. In 1988, Correas joined Les Arts Florissants, remaining with the group until 1993. He also studied with René Jacobs at the Studio-Versailles Opéra and took classes at the École d' Art Lyrique of the Paris Opéra in 1991 and remained there until 1993.
In the 1990s and the 2000s decades, Correas was active as a vocalist in various repertories, not all of them related to the Baroque era. He sang French art song, often appearing in the U.S. with such pianists as Jean-Claude Pennetier, Jean-François Heisser, and Marie-Josèphe Jude. In addition to Christie, Correas has sung under such leading Baroque music conductors as Jean-Claude Malgoire, Michel Corboz, and Sigiswald Kuijken. In 2001, Correas founded his own Baroque ensemble, Les Paladins, specializing in vocal music of the 17th and 18th centuries; he has frequently performed and recorded with that group, and he cut back on his own vocal appearances in order to devote more time to it. The group was an immediate success, making its first recording, Haendel: Cantates & Duos Italiens, in the year it was formed. Correas joined the faculty of the Conservatoire de Toulouse, teaching Baroque vocal style. He has received various honors, including being made a Chevalier of France's Order of Arts and Letters in 2011. Solo and with Les Paladins, Correas had made more than 15 recordings by the early 2020s. These included 2022's Handel: Enchantresses, on which Correas and Les Paladins backed soprano Sandrine Piau.
