Jan Łukaszewski
Conductor Jan Łukaszewski is one of Eastern Europe's leading specialists in choral music, with an orientation toward often difficult contemporary works. He is the conductor and artistic director of the Polski Chór Kameralny.
Łukaszewski was born on August 1, 1949, in Gdansk, Poland, and grew up in the city's Oliwa district; there, he founded the Mozartiana festival in 2006. Since 1983, he has conducted the Schola Cantorum Gedanensis, and he has premiered more than 700 works with that group as well as issuing numerous albums; many of those have won or been nominated for the Polish recording industry's Fryderyk Award, and he has also won recording awards abroad. Łukaszewski is married to the singer Wiesława Łukaszewska, and the two together have conducted the Pueri Cantores Olivenses Boys' and Men's Choir and have toured internationally with that group. Łukaszewski's portfolio also includes the directorship of the Polski Chór Kameralny, and he has also made more than a dozen albums with that ensemble.
Łukaszewski's repertory includes Romantic and modern works, and he is known as a conductor who can prepare difficult choral pieces quickly. He has often programmed works by Schoenberg, Messiaen, Iannis Xenakis, Toru Takemitsu, Richard Strauss, Michael Tippett, Charles Ives, and Samuel Barber. He is in demand as a guest conductor as well, both in choral music (with the Philharmonic Choir of Cracow and the Polish Radio Choir, among other groups) and orchestral music, with the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Venice Baroque Orchestra, among other ensembles. Łukaszewski continues to record prolifically for Polish and German labels. With the Polski Chór Kameralny, he released the first recording of Krzysztof Penderecki's complete a cappella choral works, and he joined the Swiss historical-instrument ensemble Musica Fiorita, he issued a recording of the motets of Gdansk Renaissance composer Andreas Hakenberger. In 2023, Łukaszewski and the Polski Chór Kameralny issued the album Górecki: Church Songs, Op. 84, on the Ondine label.
