Chris Richards
One of Britain's most prominent orchestral wind players, Chris Richards is the principal clarinetist of the London Symphony Orchestra. He is also an important educator.
Richards has performed both as Chris Richards and as Christopher Richards. He attended the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London, studying with Julian Farrell, Joy Farrall, and Thea King. At Guildhall, Richards won the Needlemakers' Wind Prize, and in 2001, he reached the finals of the Shell/LSO Competition and performed Weber's Clarinet Concerto No. 1 in F minor, Op. 73, with the London Symphony Orchestra. Richards became principal clarinetist with the Royal Northern Sinfonia at Sage Gateshead. He was appointed principal clarinet with the London Symphony Orchestra in 2010 and is also a member of the John Wilson Orchestra. Richards is in demand as a guest principal with orchestras around Britain, and he has performed as a soloist with such groups as the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Northern Sinfonia, and the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, as well as the London Symphony. Richards appeared as a session clarinetist on several albums, including Mike Oldfield's 2008 release Music of the Spheres.
That year also saw Richards premiere Richard Rodney Bennett's Troubadour Music for clarinet and piano at Wigmore Hall in London. He has been quite active as a chamber player, appearing with such groups as the Elias Quartet, the Navarra Quartet, and Ensemble 360, at such venues as Carnegie Hall in New York, Sage Gateshead, and the Aldeburgh Festival. His accompanists in clarinet-and-piano repertory have included such prominent names as Thomas Adès, Pascal Rogé, and Howard Shelley. Richards has been heard multiple times on the BBC 3 radio network, in John Adams' Gnarly Buttons, among other works. In 2020, he was featured on the London Symphony's Classic Diamonds album of orchestrally arranged songs by pop star Neil Diamond, and he appeared on the London Symphony's collection Mozart: Wind Concertos, featuring several of the orchestra's section leaders, in 2021. The following year, Richards was heard on the London Symphony's album Nazareno!, performing Leonard Bernstein's Prelude, Fugue, and Riffs in a 2018 concert recorded live.
