Chevron
British electronic musician Jonathan Valentine, known as Chevron, produces tracks in a wide variety of post-rave styles. Initially attracting attention for his releases on Planet Mu, including 2005 full-length debut Everything's Exactly the Same, he's moved from playful, laptop-created IDM and breakcore to more reflective permutations of acid and electro on releases such as 2018's Good Morning Britain. Performing with an all-hardware setup, he's played shows with artists such as Venetian Snares, Hardfloor, and Ceephax Acid Crew, and has become a mainstay at I Love Acid events and the annual Bangface Weekender Festival.
Originally from Blackpool, Valentine frequented raves and began making techno when he was a student. He moved to Brighton in 2003 and signed to Mike Paradinas' Planet Mu label that year, releasing his debut single "Swimmin' Lessons" and performing shows with labelmates such as Venetian Snares and Shitmat. Full-length Everything's Exactly the Same, a frenetic mix of hypercharged jungle and IDM, appeared in 2005. Limited tour-only released and compilation appearances followed, and in 2007, Chevron and Oen Flux, billed as Chevvers & Fluxxy, released a happy hardcore throwback EP titled Rave Like a Bastard on Shitmat's Wrong Music label. Tuff Shite, another EP of rave-influenced breakcore, was released by Ad Noiseam in 2008.
Switching to acid techno, Chevron's EP BN1 4GB was released by netlabel Acroplane Recordings in 2009. Self-released full-length Obstacles, with tracks dipping into influences from chiptune to bhangra, appeared in 2012. A subsequent EP included remixes by Mark Archer (Altern 8), Luke Vibert, and DMX Krew. Lifeshake, comprising tracks intended for a 2007 sophomore album, was released digitally by Planet Mu in 2015. Two full-lengths, Possibilities (Balkan Recordings) and Tintagel House (Acid Waxa), both appeared in 2016. Bulk Dump, a generous round-up of compilation tracks and remixes, was released in 2017. A split 7" single with Futuregrapher was issued by Icelandic label Möller Records in early 2018, and full-lengths Memory Disks. Volume One. (Shipwrec) and Good Morning Britain (Love Love Records) came out the same year. A second Memory Disks. volume, a Balkan-issued split single with Posthuman, and a double 12" for Berlin's Chemistry Radio all surfaced in 2019. Futuregrapher's Móatún 7 imprint released Chevron's split single with Púlsvídd in early 2020.
