Miss Kittin
One of electroclash's most iconic figures, Miss Kittin (or simply Kittin) is equally proficient as a DJ, vocalist, and producer. Her unmistakable deadpan voice and darkly humorous lyrics, often commenting on subjects related to fame and glamour, were featured on numerous club hits around the turn of the 21st century, particularly Felix da Housecat's "Silver Screen Shower Scene" and "Frank Sinatra," one of her first songs with longtime collaborator the Hacker. She released two full-lengths, Or (with Golden Boy) and First Album (with the Hacker) in 2001, right at the peak of electroclash's popularity, and branched out with 2004's I Com, a solo debut which ventured into dub, ambient, and downtempo. She continued issuing albums such as 2013's Calling from the Stars and the more experimental 2018 effort Cosmos, in addition to two more full-lengths with the Hacker, as well as collaborations with ANNA, Marc Houle, Dubfire, and many others. All the while, she released around a dozen DJ mixes, including a 2023 entry in Kompakt's Connecting the Dots retrospective series.
Caroline Hervé's interest in music was spurred by her parents' record collections, which covered everything from disco to funk to classical to jazz. The Grenoble, France native found herself attracted to the rave scene of the early '90s, and within three years of becoming involved, she started performing her own DJ sets. A major break came for the producer/DJ when she received bookings for the Dragon Ball events in Southern France. In 1996, she moved to Geneva, Switzerland and joined the Mental Groove Records posse. A trio of early productions on various-artists compilations were scattered throughout 1996 and 1997.
By 1998, she fell in with the International Deejay Gigolos camp as part of a duo with the Hacker, debuting on that label with the Champagne! EP, followed in 1999 by Intimités. First Album appeared in 2000, combining clubby production work with new wave pop sensibilities. The duo's sardonic single "Frank Sinatra" (which originally appeared on their first EP) caught fire with the burgeoning electroclash crowd, and Kittin's deadpan vocals similarly livened up Felix da Housecat's 2001 single "Silver Screen Shower Scene," as well as Golden Boy's Or LP that same year. With her rep cemented, Kittin dropped the techno-themed On the Road, spotlighting her impressive DJ skills. The 2002 release Radio Caroline did more of the same, moving Miss Kittin out of the electroclash pigeonhole and back to her first love, which was always spinning.
In between two more studio albums -- 2004's NovaMute-issued I Com and 2008's goth-inspired Batbox, the first on Kittin's Nobody's Bizzness imprint -- she released another pair of mix albums: Live at Sonar and A Bugged Out Mix. A second collaborative effort with the Hacker, titled Two, arrived in 2009. The 23-track solo album Calling from the Stars followed in 2013 and featured a cover version of R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts." The LP was immediately followed by the Marc Houle collaboration "Where Is Kittin?," and releases with Nicolas Masseyeff and Guy Gerber appeared in 2015. Additionally, the EP Lost Tracks, Vol. 1 (with the Hacker) was released on vinyl by Dark Entries, with Lost Tracks, Vol. 2 following in 2018. The label also released Cosmos, an ambient techno full-length credited to just Kittin, the artist's original and preferred moniker.
Kittin collaborated with Brazilian producer ANNA for the defiant single "Forever Ravers," issued by Kompakt in 2019. She was featured on Hot Since 82's 2021 track "Naboo" and "Open the Doors" by FJAAK and Tobi Neumann. David Guetta released a rework of "Silver Screen Shower Scene" in 2022. Kittin & the Hacker's Third Album also appeared that year, and Kittin was featured on another song by Masseyeff, "Present." She explored the Kompakt back catalog with the 2023 mix Connecting the Dots.
