David Myles
David Myles is an acclaimed Canadian singer/songwriter whose combination of smartly crafted pop, folk, jazz, and roots music traditions has brought him widespread acclaim. Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, he spent the latter half of the 2000s building a catalog of understated albums that accentuated his wide stylistic range without ever coming across as showy. In 2013, he found breakout success with "Inner Ninja," a collaboration with Nova Scotian rapper Classified that went triple platinum in Canada and earned a Juno Award. Already a respected artist, Myles' elevated status helped draw attention to quality albums like 2015's So Far and 2018's early rock-inspired Real Love. He continued to break new ground on 2021's all-instrumental That Tall Distance and 2022's poignant It's Only a Little Loneliness while hosting a popular podcast series, Myles from Home.
A native of Fredericton, New Brunswick, Myles first began playing guitar in high school while on a foreign exchange program in China. Back home in Canada, he spent his early college years forming a confident and distinctive sound that seemed to arrive fully formed on his 2005 debut, Together and Alone. After a brief stint in Calgary, Myles returned to the Maritimes and settled in Halifax, releasing his breakout follow-up album, Things Have Changed in 2006. The self-released LP earned him a pair of Nova Scotia Music Awards and bore the International Songwriting Competition-winning song "When It Comes My Turn." Similar accolades showered his third album, 2008's On the Line, which earned the East Coast Music Award's Folk Recording of the Year.
Over the next few years, Myles deepened his reputation as a songsmith and performer, releasing 2010's Turn Time Off and a 2011 concert set, Live at the Carleton, culled from a four-night stand at Halifax's Carleton Music Bar. That same year, he issued his fifth studio release, Into the Sun, which introduced world music elements from Africa and Brazil into his tonal palette. After featuring on Nova Scotian rapper Classified's 2011 track, "The Day Doesn't Die," the two musicians reunited in 2013 for another track, "Inner Ninja." Later featured on Classified's 2014 self-titled album, the single was a monster hit, going triple-platinum in Canada and earning them a Juno Award. Myles' own 2013 album, In the Nighttime, featured a pair of Classified-assisted tracks and further emphasized his increasingly rhythmic pop-oriented side. Following a 2014 holiday album, It's Christmas, Myles re-recorded a selection of previously issued songs to create the 2015 release So Far, his first-ever U.S. release. The slick Here Now EP appeared the following year, followed in 2018 by the decidedly retro early rock-influenced Real Love LP. An acoustic version of Real Love was released later that year as a companion album to the original. During this period, he also began hosting a regular podcast series, Myles From Home.
Myles' next outing was 2020's Leave Tonight, a relaxed and reflective album of heartfelt songs and unfussy, acoustic-oriented production. 2021's That Tall Distance marked something of a left turn for Myles. Eshewing vocals, he recorded a selection of tightly arranged instrumental pop tunes that won him another Juno Award, this time for Instrumental Album of the Year. Pivoting again, he offered one of his quietest and most contemplative albums in 2022's It's Only a Little Loneliness. The eight-song LP, his 15th studio album, explored themes of loneliness, togetherness, and religion, and its guests included Breagh Isabel, sisters Reeny and Haliey Smith, and Rose Cousins.
