The Piltdown Men
A Hollywood studio group that were put together by the Four Preps, the Piltdown Men made some goofy, novelty-tinged instrumentals in the early 1960s that enjoyed modest success in the U.S., and quite a bit in the U.K. Pianist Lincoln Mayorga and former Four Prep Ed Cobb wrote most of their material, which was mildly enjoyable, featherweight stuff that made heavy use of Duane Eddy-style low guitar riffs, Steve Douglas-style sax, and orchestral kettle and tympani drums. "Brontosaurus Stomp" got to number 75 in the States, but it was the flipside, "McDonald's Cave," that really took off in the U.K., where it made the Top 20. The Piltdown Men had two subsequent British Top 20 hits with "Piltdown Rides Again" and "Goodnight Mrs. Flintstone," but Piltdown Men releases ceased after 1962.
