Paul McCandless

An excellent multi-instrumentalist who plays with passion and distinction on oboe, English horn, bass clarinet and soprano saxophone, Paul McCandless is a fine improviser even though much of what he's done with various groups hasn't been jazz. He's worked with the Winter Consort, Gallery and Oregon, each a band with as much, if not more, classical, ethnic and even New Age influence as jazz and blues links. McCandless began playing clarinet at nine, and moved from Pennsylvania to New York in the late '60s. He studied oboe at the Manhattan School of Music, working with Robert Bloom. He played in Paul Winter's band The Winter Consort from 1968 to 1973, and was a co-founder with Ralph Towner, Glen Moore and Collin Walcott of Oregon. McCandless led his own ocetet in 1979 and played with Gallery in the '80s. He continued recording in the '80s and '90s. McCandless has done sessions as a leader for Elektra and Windham Hill. He has some dates available on CD, as well as many with Oregon.
